Artificial Intelligence or the Great Illusion, Part 1

The illusion of what? The illusion of understanding, the illusion of intelligence, the illusion of creativity, and finally the illusion of consciousness and singularity.
For many years, I began my lectures on artificial intelligence or related subjects by presenting the purpose and benefits of learning about AI, they were not obvious, and in the initial period of time - apart from the realm of fantasy and speculation - it was also difficult to talk about real threats. It was therefore a stage of motivation and encouragement to learn about this field. It was similar in the commercial sphere, implementations, where the presentation of my systems in banks or other large companies began with (I hope!) an accessible explanation of what AI is in these systems offered to companies, mainly concerning expert systems and neural networks).
At some point, interest in AI began to grow and this process continues with great acceleration to this day. Education in this field became easier because it was no longer necessary to explain that subjects related to AI are useful, can be useful in practice.
At some point, however, theses were put forward (media, articles, publications and various statements on the Internet) which, in my opinion, aroused the perception of AI in such an exaggerated way that it was easy for people who did not know the basics of how AI systems work to succumb to the illusion that all these extraordinary properties were a fact. This type of message also comes from the circle of people who deal with AI in one way or another, which additionally lends it credibility (e.g. someone noticed consciousness in an AI system (!) and announces it publicly, etc. other strong statements, "discoveries").
Of course, this does not mean that I have changed my mind about the many benefits of AI applications, including potential ones, or about the validity of studying AI, developing systems of this class. On the contrary. I only believe that the hype around AI has crossed a certain threshold, something like a fashion for AI has come, when facts began to mix with falsehood, and reality with illusion ("fashions" or rather paradigms and periods/phases of development of a given field are nothing new in science in general, and in AI in particular). Perhaps one day the dust will settle and this phenomenon will be more visible.

𝗦𝘇𝘁𝘂𝗰𝘇𝗻𝗮 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗷𝗮 𝗰𝘇𝘆𝗹𝗶 𝘄𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗸𝗮 𝗶𝗹𝘂𝘇𝗷𝗮
Iluzja czego? Iluzja rozumienia, iluzja inteligencji, iluzja kreatywności i w końcu iluzja świadomości oraz osobliwości.
Przez wiele lat wykłady ze sztucznej inteligencji lub powiązanych z tą dziedziną przedmiotów rozpoczynałem od przedstawiania celowości i korzyści z uczenia się na temat AI, nie były one oczywiste, a w początkowym okresie czasu – poza sferą fantastyki i spekulacji – trudno było też mówić o realnych zagrożeniach. Był to zatem etap motywowania i zachęty do poznawania tej dziedziny. Podobnie było w sferze komercyjnej, wdrożeń, gdzie prezentacja moich systemów w bankach czy innych dużych firmach rozpoczynała się od (mam nadzieję!) przystępnego wyjaśnienia czym jest to AI w tych systemach oferowanych firmom, głównie dotyczyło to systemów ekspertowych i sieci neuronowych).
W pewnym momencie zainteresowanie wokół AI zaczęło wzrastać i ten proces z dużym przyspieszeniem trwa do dziś. Edukacja w tej dziedzinie stała się łatwiejsza bowiem nie trzeba było już wyjaśniać, że przedmioty związane z AI są pożyteczne, mogą się przydać w praktyce.
W którymś momencie zaczęto jednak stawiać tezy (media, artykuły, publikacje i różne wypowiedzi w Internecie), które wg mnie wzbudziły postrzeganie AI w tak przesadny sposób, że osobom nie znającym podstaw działania systemów AI, łatwo było ulec iluzji, że te wszystkie nadzwyczajne właściwości są faktem. Tego typu przekaz płynie również z kręgu osób, które w taki czy inny sposób zajmują się AI co dodatkowo go uwiarygadnia (np. ktoś dostrzegł w systemie AI świadomości (!) i ogłasza to publicznie, itp. inne mocne stwierdzenia, „odkrycia”).
Nie oznacza to oczywiście, że zmieniłem zdanie na temat wielu korzyści płynących z zastosowań AI, także tych potencjalnych, ani co do zasadności studiowania AI, rozwijania systemów tej klasy. Przeciwnie. Uważam jedynie, że szum wokół AI przekroczył pewien próg, nastało coś w rodzaju mody na AI, gdy fakty zaczęły się mieszać z fałszem, a rzeczywistość z iluzją ("mody" a lepiej paradygmaty i okresy/fazy rozwoju danej dziedziny to nic nowego w nauce w ogóle, a w szczególności w AI). Być może pewnego dnia kurz opadnie i będzie to zjawisko lepiej widać.
